We have heard many wonderful things about Doc Fords and thought we were long overdue to pay them a visit. We chose the Fort Myers Beach location. Despite it not being season technically, they were rather busy. We opted to use the valet parking (complimentary but please remember to tip them) and away we went inside in the hopes we would not have a long wait. We were fine with either inside or outside so we opted for first available. We were told it would be 30 mins or so. We went into the bar to wait but in what seemed liked 3 minutes…our table was ready. We were seated upstairs in the outdoor area that had a magnificent view.
Our server greeted us and took our drink orders. She explained the specials and their signature dish the Yucatan Shrimp. What is interesting is that 2 of our dining partners had dined at Doc Fords many times before and never were told of the signature dish. We all passed on trying it though. We did try some Margaritas and they were pretty good cocktails. Sometimes restaurants have bartenders that do not seem to know how to make a good drink but that is not the case here.
We settled on the grouper sandwich, salads and pulled pork sandwich. It is not often here in SWFL you find a restaurant that understands flavor profiles and uses products and seasoning so that your food has flavor and Doc Fords does nail this down. Even the black beans and rice were flavorful. The grouper was fresh and the panko breading was a nice and delightful change which complimented the delicate taste of the grouper nicely. The salads were fresh as well, lettuce crisp, tomatoes had flavor, cukes were crunchy. For dessert, we tried the Key Lime Pie. It is outstanding and perhaps the best we have had in SWFL.
Overall, we can see why Doc Fords is so popular not only with our season visitors but our local residents as well. Great views, great food makes for a great place to spend an evening….just be prepared for a wait.
